I’ve spent a bit of time lately digging a little deeper into the big data releases. As I’ve said before, more than 70% of material end of day moves happens around these releases and major events, so if you want to be a successful trader you need to run towards this volatility, and not away from, in my opinion.

Below are some more data points for the US CPI, focussing particularly on range trading, and break of the 30 minute candle post-announcement.

Why am I looking at the data from this perspective? I become more and more convinced over time that having Range Trading as another ‘Tool’ in your arsenal is essential to rounding out your skills as an index trader, particularly around big data releases.

I’ve attached the CPI dataset below, which I’ll update monthly.

I’ll leave you to review and draw your own insights and develop other potential strategies, but for me personally there are quite a few nuggets in there which you can combine with other tools and insights:
